SWIFT's Blockchain Ledger Goes Live: 18 Banks Begin 24/7 Tokenized Cross-Border Payments
The news: SWIFT officially launched its blockchain-based payment ledger on 15 July, nine months after first unveiling the system at Sibos 2025.
Eighteen major banks - including ANZ, BNP Paribas, HSBC, Citi, DBS and Wells Fargo - are now preparing to test live tokenized transactions on the permissioned network. It settles around the clock, instead of within the cutoff windows that have long constrained correspondent banking.

The institutions involved represent a combined balance-sheet footprint in the tens of trillions of dollars. SWIFT claims the system delivers greater liquidity efficiency, better cash-flow visibility and faster cross-border execution, all while meeting global finance's compliance and resilience standards.
What's next? The big question is who joins beyond the founding 18.
Will non-bank participants - fintechs, payment processors, correspondent networks outside the current group - get access or be formally excluded? That will shape the ledger's long-term architecture.
Nobody has publicly detailed the governance process for onboarding, protocol upgrades or dispute resolution among members. That process will matter as much as the tech itself.

The news: Russia's central bank confirmed on 15 July that the digital ruble will enter mandatory rollout starting 1 September 2026.
The 12 largest Russian banks and retailers with annual revenues above 120 million rubles must support the central bank digital currency from that date. The mandate then cascades to smaller institutions and merchants through 2027 and 2028.
